Primary School Expansion Programme

Closed 14 Feb 2014

Opened 6 Jan 2014

Overview

In recent years there has been a marked upturn in the numbers of children born in the Borough. By way of response we have embarked on a programme to increase primary schools’ capacity to meet the additional demand for places, initially at reception year, but in the case of the proposed expansions of the three junior schools, at Year 3 too. This increased demand is projected to be sustained at least up to the end of the decade.  The Local Authority has a core duty to ensure there are sufficient places to meet the needs of its children and families and therefore it is obliged to plan for the expansion of its school capacity.

Why your views matter

Following the decisions taken by the Council’s Children, Family and Education Committee at its meeting on the 10th October, authorisation has been given to undertake public consultation on the possible enlargement of three junior schools by one form of entry from September 2015. The schools directly involved are: Cheam Common Junior; The Federation of St Elphege’s Catholic Junior and St Mary’s Catholic Junior.

What happens next

A report will be submitted to the Councils Children Family and Education Committee at its meeting on 13 March 2014 detailing responses received and any issues raised.  The Committee will be asked to make a decision to take the proposals forward to the publication of staturory proposals in which the exact changes to be made are set out.  Interested parties can respond before a final decision is made in the summer term.
