Green Wrythe Lane proposals - between Wrythe Green and Middleton Circle
Overview
Sutton Council is proposing highway improvements at various locations along Green Wrythe Lane between Middleton Circle and Wrythe Green to improve road safety.
Between 2020 - 2025, there were a total number of 70 casualties reported in Green Wrythe Lane between Middleton Circle and Wythe Green (including 20m into the side roads of junctions with Green Wrythe Lane).
The aim of the proposed measures is to reduce the risk and severity of collisions to make it safer for all road users and improve road safety for everyone.
This supports our aim to reduce collision rates across the Borough as set out in Sutton’s Sustainable Transport Strategy. This also supports TfL's and the Mayor's "Vision Zero" approach to reduce collisions across London.
As part of the feasibility study we have looked at the collision data, traffic volume and speed data, undertaken site investigations, reviewed junction layouts and considered the concerns received from residents in recent years. Based on the results of the feasibility study, the proposals below have been agreed with ward councillors.
What we are proposing:
- Middleton Circle service roads - Improve the existing informal crossing points in the service roads adjacent to the existing zebra crossings by introducing raised platforms to slow vehicles down on the approaches to the crossings. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-111)

- Green Wythe Lane junction with Neville Walk - New waiting and loading restrictions in Green Wrythe Lane joining on from the existing restrictions at the junction with Neville Walk to a point outside the party wall of Nos.388/386 Green Wrythe Lane to improve the visibility of drivers exiting Neville Walk into Green Wrythe Lane. - Assembly Walk - Introduce one-way working in Assembly Walk to run in the direction from Green Wrythe Lane to Middleton Road to reduce the number of turning movements happening onto Green Wrythe Lane to improve conditions for pedestrians. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-113)
- Neville Walk - Introduce one-way working in Neville Walk to run in the direction from Middleton Road to Green Wrythe Lane to reduce the number of turning movements onto Green Wrythe Lane to improve conditions for pedestrians. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-114)
- Muschamp Road - New raised platform entry treatment in Muschamp Road junction with Green Wrythe Lane and enlarge the existing island in Muschamp Road to assist pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road and slow the speed of traffic. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-117)
- Green Wrythe Lane existing mini roundabout at the junction with Culvers Avenue - Install new speed cushions on the approaches to the existing mini roundabout at the junction with Culvers Avenue to slow the speed of traffic approaching the mini roundabout. We also propose to refigure the alignment of the existing mini roundabout and raise the central dome to provide better deflection and visibility. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-108)
- Green Wrythe Lane existing traffic signalled pedestrian crossing near Aultone Way - Install a raised platform at the crossing point to slow the speed of traffic approaching the crossing. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-107)
- Green Wrythe Lane junction with Aultone Way - Install a raised platform entry treatment in Aultone Way at the junction with Green Wrythe Lane to assist pedestrians to cross the road and slow the speed of traffic. Please see plan for details (LBS-30004-P-106)
