Wrythe Green Area – Proposed Speed Reducing Features and Improved Pedestrian Facilities

Closed 3 Mar 2024

Opened 2 Feb 2024

Overview

Sutton Council is committed to making roads safer in the borough and giving people more choice in how they travel. We want to improve safety on the roads to reduce the number and severity of accidents and to make it easier for people to walk or cycle.

We are proposing to introduce traffic calming and pedestrian measures in the Wrythe Green area. The proposed measures are in response to requests raised by local residents, parents of children attending schools in the area and ward councillors, and involve slower traffic speeds and safer crossing points.

The proposals

Proposed plan

  •  At the Brookfield Avenue junction with Wrythe Lane - create a new  raised platform (also called an entry treatment) which makes it easier for pedestrians to use the crossing point, and will also slow drivers down who are entering Brookfield Avenue

  • At the existing pedestrian traffic light crossing on Wrythe Lane, outside Waterloo Cottages - it is proposed to widen the footway to give more space for people and so improve the crossing point

  • Where Wrythe Green Road meets with Wrythe Lane - it is proposed to widen the footway to make it easier to use the crossing point

  • At the Green Wrythe Lane junction with Wrythe Green Road (near the petrol station) - provide a new raised platform (also called an entry treatment) to improve the pedestrian crossing point, which will also slow drivers down when entering Green Wrythe Lane, so they take more care on this section of road.

  • West Street, on the one way section running between the greens - it is proposed to introduce three new raised platforms (speed tables) to improve the pedestrian crossing points between the paths on the green and to slow drivers down
