Wales Avenue/Cambridge Road Area, Carshalton - proposed speed reduction and pedestrian safety measures
Overview
Sutton Council is committed to making our borough’s roads safer and giving people more choice in how they travel. We want to improve safety on roads to reduce the number and severity of accidents, to make it easier for people to walk or cycle and to improve air quality.
Residents have previously told us about traffic issues in the Wales Avenue/ Cambridge Road area and we have used this feedback to develop proposals to address these issues.
We are now inviting you to give feedback on proposals to introduce a 20mph speed limit in the Wales Avenue area, traffic calming in Cambridge Road and a new pedestrian crossing in Banstead Road, close to its junction with Harrow Road, as shown on the plan below.
A plan showing these proposed measures can be found here:
The proposal:
-
20mph speed limit: The proposal is to reduce speeds to 20mph on Banstead Road (between the railway line and Park Hill), Park Hill (between Gordon Road and Carshalton Road), Cambridge Road, Oxford Road, Harrow Road, Warren Park Road, Hawthorn Road, Fairview Road, King's Lane, Wales Avenue, Walnut Close, Weihurst Gardens, Alpine View, Park Hill Close and Hill Road.
-
Signs and road markings to indicate a 20mph speed limit: the proposal would include installing digital signs in Harrow Road on lighting columns outside house numbers 46/48 and numbers 87/89, as well as in Oxford Road on lighting columns outside house numbers 45/47 and number 42. These digital signs would remind drivers of the speed limit, make all road users aware of their speed and improve safety.
-
Speed cushions in Cambridge Road: outside house numbers 27/29, 45/47 and 59/61 to reduce traffic speeds in the road and improve safety.
-
New zebra crossing: located in Banstead Road, close to Hill Road, to help pedestrians to cross the road by giving them priority over motor vehicles.
The aim of these proposals is to reduce the risk and severity of accidents, provide a safer environment for all road users and make it easier for people to walk and cycle in the area if they wish to.
