An experimental Low Traffic Area scheme was launched in this area in 2020, in response to changes in travel habits around the borough during the COVID-19 Pandemic and to support a green recovery.
The Council followed Streetspace guidance issued by Transport for London, when introducing its trial five low traffic areas, thirteen school streets and three cycle schemes last autumn. A recent High Court ruling has effectively withdrawn the Streetspace guidance, creating confusion for trial schemes and councils across the capital. Given the uncertainty this has created, and following further legal advice, the Council’s Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee agreed at its meeting on 11 February to remove all trial schemes across the borough.
Thank you
The Council would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback on the trial Low Traffic Area scheme.
We will continue to look at alternative ways to improve road safety, reduce carbon emissions and consider ways to address the issues of inconsiderate driving in the borough.
The Council is committed to any future proposals for schemes only being introduced after Sutton’s own consultation procedures have been followed and if there is support.
