Morland Road Area - proposed 20mph speed limit

Closed 19 Sep 2024

Opened 22 Aug 2024

Overview

Sutton Council is committed to making roads safer in the borough and giving people more choice in how they travel. We want to improve safety on the roads to reduce the number and severity of accidents, to make it easier for people to walk or cycle and to improve air quality.

Reducing the speed limit to 20mph improves safety on the roads as it reduces the number and severity of traffic accidents. Motor vehicles travelling at lower speeds in residential areas provide a safer environment for all road users, especially people on foot or on bicycles, giving people more choice in how they travel.

We are inviting you now to give feedback on a proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit in the Morland Road area.

The proposal

Read the Plan

The scheme would reduce the speed limit to 20mph on Morland Road, Reading Road, Alfred Road, Albert Road, Victoria Road, Gauntlett Road and Langley Park Road (between Carshalton Road and the railway bridge), where it will link to the existing 20mph speed limit already in place on Langley Park Road.

The aim of the 20mph proposal would be to reduce the risk and severity of traffic accidents. This would provide a safer environment for all road users in the area and would make it easier and more pleasant for people to walk and cycle if they wish to.

All the roads bordering this area have a 20mph speed limit, including those on the south side of the railway line, so introducing a 20mph limit in the Morland Road area would effectively ensure consistency in driving speeds across the whole area, reduce confusion and avoid drivers potentially using roads in the Morland Road area to avoid those streets which already have a 20mph speed limit.
