Gander Green Lane North Cheam – Proposed 20mph speed limit and raised platform
Overview
Sutton Council is committed to making roads safer in our borough.
Reducing the speed of vehicles helps improve safety on our roads as it reduces the number and severity of traffic accidents. Motor vehicles travelling at lower speeds provide a safer environment for all road users - especially people on foot or on bicycles - giving people more choice in how they travel.
What is proposed?
- 20mph speed limit: The proposal is to reduce the speed limit to 20mph on Gander Green Lane, between the A24 (London Road) and the A217 (Oldfields Road).
- A raised platform (also called an entry treatment) in on Kimpton Road, at the junction with Gander Green Lane, to slow vehicles down and improve pedestrian facilities.
The aim of the 20mph proposal would be to provide a safer environment for all road users and make it easier for people to walk and cycle in the area if they wish to. It would also reduce the risk and severity of traffic accidents.
As you may be aware, many of the roads around Gander Green Lane have 20mph speed limits in place. Introducing a 20mph speed limit in the area would provide more consistent driving speeds across the area and reduce any confusion over what the speed limit is. It would also deter drivers who don’t live locally from using the Gander Green Lane area to avoid those existing roads with lower speed limits.
We are also undertaking a separate consultation with residents in the section of Gander Green Lane between the A217 (Oldsfield Road) and A232 (Cheam Road) and surrounding roads on a proposed 20mph speed limit for that area.
Why your views matter
Please take a few minutes to tell us if you think the proposals will make your local roads safer and improve the environment or if you can think of anything that could improve it.
The deadline for feedback is midnight on 15 December 2024.
While it will not be possible to reply to you individually, all comments will be taken into account.
At the end of this consultation period, council officers will consider all the responses received. We will consider and give more priority to the responses from residents most impacted by the scheme and then from residents in the wider area. The consultation is not a referendum and the results of the consultation will be considered as part of the overall consideration on whether to proceed with the scheme or not.
The final decision on whether to proceed with the scheme will be made with the local councillors, the borough’s Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainable Transport, and council officers.
Residents in the consultation area will then be notified of the outcome.
