Proposed 20mph speed limit on Crossways, The Gallop (part) and The Downsway - T29012/21

Overview

Following representations from some residents of Crossways concerned about the speed and volume of traffic, the Council is proposing to implement a 20mph speed limit in Crossways, The Gallop (part) and The Downsway. 

These issues were discussed and approved at the Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont Local Committee on 26 November 2020.

The proposal is to reduce the speed of traffic on these roads, and will be an extension of the existing 20mph area to the north of these roads in the South Sutton area.  Officers will also review the existing traffic calming features in Crossways and look to improve the traffic signs and road markings along the lengths of these roads to further encourage drivers to reduce their speeds.

Transport for London funding is available to implement this 20mph scheme this year. 

Officers are currently working to assess the impact of the recently announced new NHS acute hospital proposed for a site off Cotswold Road. Crossways, The Gallop and The Downsway are included in the traffic study area, so any proposals relating to the restriction of vehicle movements to reduce the volume of traffic will be progressed in coordination with that study.

Why your views matter

The feedback received from this informal consultation will be assessed by officers and ward councillors and the scheme will progress to implementation if the majority of the responses received are in support of the scheme.
