Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment

A Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) is a comprehensive assessment of the current and future pharmaceutical needs of the local population. Health and Wellbeing Boards have a legal duty to produce, consult and publish a PNA for their area.

Following the 60 day consultation, the Sutton Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (2015-2018) has been approved by the Sutton Health and Wellbeing Board and is available to view here. The PNA presents information about the demographics and health priorities of the local population alongside a detailed picture of current pharmaceutical services.

Overview

Last year we ran a survey asking people for their views on pharmacy services in the London Borough of Sutton. The feedback that we received has been incorporated into the draft Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA) and this consultation is an opportunity to check that the PNA document reflects the issues that you think are important.

What is this report?

On 1 April 2013, statutory responsibility for publishing and updating a statement of the need for pharmaceutical services passed to Health and Wellbeing Boards. This statement of need is referred to as a Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment (PNA). Health and Wellbeing Boards must ensure PNA’s for their local area are updated and published by April 2015.

Pharmaceutical Needs Assessments are used by the NHS to decide whether to approve applications for new pharmacies in an area and by commissioners to identify local health needs that could be addressed by pharmacy services.

A 60 day consultation period is now in progress and will run from Tuesday 27th January until Friday 27th March 2015.

What happens next

The feedback from this consultation will influence any changes made to the draft PNA before it goes to the Health and Wellbeing Board for approval and then becomes a working document in April 2015.
